The iridology chart, explained
Written by Boyan Minev, Founder · Last reviewed June 6, 2026
An iridology chart is a map of the iris. It divides the coloured part of the eye into zones and links each zone to a different organ or body system — the tool an iridologist uses to know where in the iris to look. If you’ve ever wondered why a practitioner studies one specific spot of your eye, the chart is the reason. Here’s how it’s organised, and how Iris AI reads it automatically. (New to the practice? Start with what iridology is.)
The iris as a clock face
The chart treats each iris like a clock. Positions around the circle correspond to different regions of the body — for example, the brain and head zones sit near the top (around 12 o’clock), while lower organs map to the lower part of the iris. Left and right eyes map to the left and right sides of the body, which is why a full reading looks at both irises.
Rings from the pupil outward
The chart also reads the iris in concentric rings, moving out from the pupil:
- Innermost ring — the digestive system (stomach and intestines).
- Middle rings — major organs and the circulatory, nervous, and respiratory systems.
- Outer rings — the lymphatic system, skin, and elimination.
The idea is that the body is represented from the inside out, with the most internal processes closest to the pupil.
Bernard Jensen’s chart — the reference standard
The most widely used chart was developed by Bernard Jensen in the 20th century, mapping 90+ distinct zones across the iris. It built on the original 1880s work of Ignatz von Peczely. Most modern practice — and most modern apps — trace back to Jensen’s detailed map.
The 12 zones Iris AI maps
Iris AI condenses the chart into 12 organ zones that it analyses across both eyes from a single photo — digestive, nervous, respiratory, circulatory, musculoskeletal, lymphatic, endocrine, and more. Within each zone it reads the markings and colours a practitioner would, and factors in your constitution type.
What the chart can and can’t tell you
The chart is a framework for where to pay attention and notice tendencies early — not a medical diagnostic grid. Iridology is a complementary wellness practice, not a clinically validated method, and Iris AI does not diagnose, treat, or prevent any condition. For medical questions, always see a qualified healthcare professional.
