Iridology, explained

What is iridology?

Written by Boyan Minev, Founder · Last reviewed June 6, 2026

Iridology is the practice of studying the iris — the coloured part of the eye — to gain insights about a person’s overall wellness. Practitioners look at the patterns, colours, and tiny structures of the iris and relate different zones of it to different organs and body systems. It has been practised for more than 200 years, and it’s the practice Iris AI is built on. This guide explains how it works in plain language, and is honest about where its limits are.

A 200-year-old practice

Iridology was formalised in the 1880s by a Hungarian physician, Ignatz von Peczely, who noticed recurring patterns between markings in the iris and the rest of the body. In the 20th century the American practitioner Bernard Jensen expanded it into a detailed chart of 90+ zones that maps regions of the iris to organs and systems. That chart is still the reference most iridologists use today. Iridology is considered a complementary wellness practice — a way of paying attention to the body, used alongside (never instead of) conventional care.

How iridologists read the iris

A reading looks at a few different things at once:

  • Zones. The iris is mapped like a clock face, with different sections relating to different organs and systems — digestive, nervous, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic, and more.
  • Markings. Features such as lacunae (small gaps in the fibres), crypts, nerve rings, and pigment spots are read as signs of tendencies or areas worth attention.
  • Colour. Variations in colour across the iris can carry meaning in the iridology tradition.
  • Constitution type. The base colour and fibre structure place an iris into a constitution type — Lymphatic (blue/grey), Hematogenic (brown), or Biliary/Mixed (green/hazel) — each associated with different tendencies and needs.

One detail that fascinates people: practitioners often cite a figure of roughly 28,000 nerve fibres connecting it to the nervous system, which is part of why the tradition treats it as a place worth reading. For how each of these features is interpreted in detail, see our deeper guide in how our method works.

What the iris can suggest — and what it can’t

Used well, iridology is good at one thing in particular: helping you notice things early and gently, and pointing you toward small, sensible adjustments — a change in diet, a herb, more rest. That preventative spirit is exactly what the modern wellness world now calls healthspan — caring about the quality of your years, not just their number.

But it’s just as important to be clear about the limits:

  • Iridology is not a clinically validated diagnostic method. Mainstream medicine does not recognise it as a way to diagnose disease.
  • It does not diagnose, treat, or prevent any medical condition.
  • It is not a replacement for a doctor. For any medical concern, always consult a qualified healthcare professional.

How Iris AI brings iridology to your phone

Traditionally, an iridology reading meant visiting a practitioner in person. Iris AI uses AI vision recognition to do the reading from a single photo: you capture your iris with the app’s guided camera, the AI maps 12 organ zones across both eyes, and you receive a structured wellness plan across five areas — diet, herbs, nervous system, emotional balance, and movement. You can re-scan over time and compare readings, which is how people have always gotten the most out of the practice. It starts from $3.99 for 5 credits, and your iris image is used only to generate your analysis — never sold or used for advertising.

The short version

Iridology reads the iris to offer wellness insights, with a 200-year tradition behind it and a prevention-first spirit that lines up with today’s focus on healthspan. It’s a complementary practice — a thoughtful way to pay attention to your body, not a medical diagnosis. Iris AI makes that reading fast, private, and affordable.
